Tips and Tricks to Make Upholstery Look Like New Again
We all love spending some time sitting on our favourite sofa, watching an interesting TV show and having a nice snack. Over time, however, crumbs, spilled drinks, dust, dirt and pet hair build up on your sofa, making it look not so appealing. You need to pay special attention to your couch from time to time in order to keep it clean. Upholstery cleaning should be done very carefully. It depends on the material that the furniture is made of. You need to use safe cleaners that won’t damage the surface and will treat the spots gently. Here are some sofa cleaning hacks that will help you remove the dirt and grime from your furniture easily and quickly.
1. Vacuum
Start pre-cleaning the sofa by vacuuming up the crumbs and dirt from the furniture. Carefully clean the crevices where most of the dirt accumulates. Remove the cushions so that you have easier access to each side. If there is too much pet hair on the sofa, try using a lint roller to remove it more easily.
2. Wipe down the hard surfaces
If your sofa has exposed wood or metal area, make sure you wipe it down and clean it from dust and dirt.
3. Determine the type of the fabric
You need to be sure what type of fabric you are dealing with. Look at the tag on the sofa and read the instructions on how to properly clean it.
- “W” means you can use a water-based detergent;
- “S” means you should use a dry cleaner detergent only;
- “WS” means you should use either a water-based product with a steam vacuum or a dry cleaning detergent;
- “O” indicates that the material is organic. It can be washed with cold water only;
- “X” means that you should use a vacuum cleaner only or a professional shampooing service.
4. Remove the stains
You already know what type of material you are dealing with so it is time for action. Buy a commercial cleaner that is suitable for the job or make your own homemade product using simple ingredients such as mixing vinegar, warm water and dish soap (for fabric upholstery) or mixing olive oil and vinegar (for leather upholstery), etc. Do a quick research and find the best products that you can use in order to clean your couch effectively. If you are not sure if the sofa cleaning agent you are about to use is safe for the fabric, treat a small area first. When cleaning a leather sofa, stay away from water as it can damage the material. Carefully choose the products that you are going to use. The best options are products made with oils and waxes.
5. Let the furniture dry
The final step is allowing the furniture to dry. You can do this naturally by opening all of the windows at home and letting the breeze in. If you don’t have enough time, you can use a fan or even a hairdryer to speed things up.
These are the basic steps of turning your sofa into a brand-new-looking one by removing all the dirt from it. Keep in mind that the most important step is identifying what kind of material it is made of and using the right cleaning products for the task.
