How Do You Deep Clean a Mattress?
Be honest, when was the last time you actually thought about mattress cleaning? It is one of those things that you just take for granted until you notice some kind of deterioration – on your health or on your skin. Or maybe some kind of smell that could come from nowhere else other than the mattress. Or, you just downright spilled something on the mattress, like food or some kind of drink. Or, your pet had a wee accident while enjoying itself on your bed. But aside from all the latter cases, you also need to take care of the mattress every now and then just for maintenance’s sake. A mattress should be cleaned at least two times an year, and when it comes to that – or to any of the cases above – here is how to handle it.
Rust Stains
Okay, rust stains are harmless. Ugly, yes, but harmless. They do nothing but stay there and be irrelevant. They are absolutely useless and do not deteriorate, nor damage anything. They are simply things to be covered by your sheet. Just get over them and move on to more important issues.
Dust Mites
This is something that you should be worried about as you are breathing it in when you are sleeping or lying down on the bed. The solution is pretty simple – take all the sheets and coverings off, take your vacuum cleaner and vacuum the dust out of your mattress. Change the sheets with new ones and voila! No more dust on the mattress. Do that regularly and you will never have to worry about respiratory problems.
Food / Drink Stains
There are simply annoying to handle more than anything else. They can be treated just like every other food or drink stain in your home. Just as you would do upholstery cleaning, do the mattress cleaning as well. If you want, use a specialised upholstery cleaner, or simply use an organic home-made cleaner such as baking soda or vinegar. Add water (to one of them – never, ever, ever mix them!) to make soda paste or an all-purpose cleaner with the vinegar, add to the stain and scrub. It should easily go away and leave the mattress looking like brand new, and somewhat disinfected as well. Use lemon juice for further disinfection and to add a fresher smell to the mix.
Pet Urine
This is somewhat trickier, especially if you have a cat, because things do get smelly and that odour lasts. Home cleaners will only get you so far with standard stains, but this one is a bit more special. Cat urine in particular has quite the amount of ammonia content and it will reek at first and only smell after you clean it. So in order to fully get rid of it, you need to get a special upholstery cleaner, or a carpet cleaner, one that is enzymatic, which will reach deep down into the stain and basically take it apart, atom by atom. This type of cleaning should also be done in a room where there is a lot of air flow so that you can be sure the mattress dries out – you do not want mould or mildew on a mattress, because it will be much easier to replace it than to clean it.
And there you have it – many fine methods for mattress cleaning at home. Take your pick according to your need, and be thorough when doing it. It takes a little effort, it takes a little time, and it lasts for months and months. Alternatively, just trust your local cleaning company to do it for you – it is always a method, of course.
