How to Care for Your Hardwood Floors
If you’re lucky enough to have hardwood floors in your home in Fulham then you probably already know that they need much more care than other types of flooring. Hardwood floor cleaning is easy when you know how, but there are lots of dos and don’ts when taking care of your floors. If you’re looking for tips and advice on how to care for your floors then here are some words of wisdom for you and your home in SW6.
1) What to use.
You don’t want to use any strong chemicals to clean your floors, and always avoid hardwood cleaning products that contain ammonia, as this can bleach and damage them. Make sure you know what type of wood your floors are made from to ensure you’re choosing the right cleaning products. You should be aware that many cleaning cloths can actually scratch the surface of hardwood flooring, so make sure to always use a microfiber cloth. Vacuum cleaners shouldn’t be used on the main portion of the floor, but are fine for cleaning in the corners if you have a small enough attachment.
2) Cleaning methods.
Always dust with your microfiber cloth before cleaning, and then use a mop with a similar microfiber head. Take your cleaning product and gently mist a small area before mopping clean. Repeat until your whole floor in SW10 has been covered. Never use anything more than a fine mist to clean, otherwise the dampness could penetrate the wood and stain. A detergent that contains wax will leave a nice and shiny feel to your floors – just make sure it’s suitable for the type of wood you have!
3) When to clean.
Hardwood floors need to be cleaned, or at least dusted, every week or so. Try to incorporate cleaning them into your weekly domestic cleaning routine to keep them looking their best.
4) Preventing damage to your floors.
There are a few ways in which you can prevent damage happening to your hardwood floors in Fulham. Firstly, try placing mats at any entrances to the area with hardwood floors. These will help to collect dirt that would otherwise tarnish the flooring. Similarly, you might like to try placing a rug in the room – this is especially worthwhile if your hardwood floors are in a high-traffic area of your home. If you share your home with pets or children then caring for your floors can be more tricky. Make sure children know the importance of being careful around any hardwood areas, and keep play to a minimum to prevent scratching. Pets’ nails can also scratch hardwood floors, so try to keep these trim to ensure that this doesn’t happen.
5) Dealing with mess.
Spills and muck that appear on your floors in Fulham should be dealt with immediately to prevent any long-term issues or problems. When handle a spill, use a microfiber cloth to soak up as much of the liquid as possible. The longer you leave liquid, the more of a problem it will become for your floors, as it will seep into the wood and can even cause it to rot. When dealing with dirt, grime or muck, use a small amount of your hardwood cleaning solution and a touch of water to dab at the mess until it disappears. Again, try to do this as soon as possible.
6) Professional care.
If you have any concerns about your floors then why not contact a professional cleaning company in SW6? Many offer services designed to clean hardwood floors, so have a look and see what’s available in your area.
